I'm so excited to launch something that'due south been in the works for several months!  Each Wednesday, you tin wait forward to a uncomplicated writing lesson for primary grades — information technology's a collaboration between This Reading Mama and The Measured Mom.

I really need help teaching writing. I'm definitely going to try these writing lessons for first grade and second grade.

 Simple writing lessons.

What comes to mind when you hear those words?  Possibly it's a collection of writing prompts that students reply to in their daily journals.  Perhaps you lot're thinking of a series of worksheets to help children exercise capitalization, parts of voice communication, and proper spelling. Or maybe you're hoping for a curriculum which simplifies your teaching by listing every lesson from September to May.

The fact is that teaching writing is not every bit elementary every bit prompts, drills, or a prescribed curriculum.

What are uncomplicated writing lessons?

1. Simple writing lessons differ from traditional writing educational activity.

In our writing series you won't find a serial of daily prompts. You will find lessons which show students how to detect and choose their own topics.

You probably won't discover children completing a piece of writing in a single sitting.  Y'all volition find students taking some of their writing all the way through the writing process over days or even weeks.

Y'all won't find children limited to writing only the words they tin can spell.  You willfind students spelling any of the words in their vocabulary — according to their ain developmental level.

You lot won't observe a series of lessons mapped out before the year begins.  You will acquire to cull what to teach based on your students' electric current needs.

two. Uncomplicated writing lessons are taught as students follow the writing procedure.

If y'all're focused on the procedure, and so y'all're interested in the journey.  The destination is important, merely you're near interested in what it takes to go there.

Quality writing pedagogy takes students through the writing process – over days or fifty-fifty weeks.

Pre-writing: Writers make up one's mind on a topic and brainstorm ideas.

Drafting: Writers write sentences and paragraphs, reread what they've written, and get suggestions from others.

Revising: Writers rearrange words or sentences, add or delete, replace words, and make certain their writing is fluent.

Editing: Writers correct grammer, spelling, and punctuation.

Publishing/Sharing: Writers create a last copy of their work and share it.

3. Simple writing lessons include a mini-lesson in which teachers clearly model a skill or strategy.

Mini-lessons are simply that: mini.  They can be as short as 2 minutes and might take equally long as 15.   Teachers model the lesson with their own writing.

Hundreds of possibilities be for mini-lessons!  Here are just a few:

  • Choosing a topic
  • How to stretch a word and write the sounds you hear
  • Using quotation marks correctly
  • Reread your writing to check for fluency
  • What to practise when you lot're "stuck"
  • How to follow an editor'southward checklist

iv. Uncomplicated writing lessons get out the bulk of time for students to write independently.

We didn't teach our toddlers to talk by drilling them on blends and give-and-take endings.  We talkedwith them in existent and meaningful means.

We don't need to drill our children on the skills of good writing.  Instead, we give them opportunities to write in real and purposeful ways – and nosotros support and teach them as they abound.

Master students should exist given at least 20-xxx minutes to write independently – ideally on a daily basis.

5. We cull simple writing lessons based on observations of our student writers.

A teacher's manual might tell me that the next writing lesson is about how to insert information past using a caret.  But my first grader takes twenty minutes to write a unmarried sentence and is clearly not ready for this advanced revising skill.

Or peradventure the prescribed lesson is for putting periods at the stop of sentences. My outset grader has been doing that correctly for a year.  Conspicuously she needs to learn something else.

Choosing what to teach based on our students' needs isn't easy.  But the more you do it, the more proficient you'll become.  And The Measured Mom and This Reading Mama are hither to assist!

6. Simple Writing Lessons for Primary Grades:
